A Groundbreaking Ceremony and a Chapel Inauguration

On Wednesday, July 6, Deep Griha’s entire staff visited the two rural project sites, City of Knowledge (Vidyanagari) in Choufoula village and City of Child in Kasurdi village. The morning began at Deep Griha Academy, where visitors toured the school and strolled through the sensory garden that helps teach the school’s students about various colors and textures. After the guests moved to the groundbreaking site, a short ceremony officially began the new phase of the primary school construction—construction that will include new classrooms and a computer lab both for the expanding school and for the surrounding villages. The DGA teachers serving as Masters of Ceremonies honoured various guests, most notably Centrica (British Gas), the company funding the new building’s construction, and a local village leader. DGA director Ashlesha Onawale was the first to literally break the ground, but the Centrica team, honoured guests and staff members, eager to take a stab at the symbolic plot, soon followed suit. Deep Griha’s urban staff then took the opportunity to explore City of Knowledge’s beautiful property, climbing to the top of the nearby hill to gaze down at the rugged slopes and the school below. The buses then departed and phase two of the day began at City of Child.

City of Child’s young residents greeted the guests with a chant and several of the children excitedly described the dances they were to perform later in the day. After an excellent lunch homemade by the City of Child staff, guests gathered under a celebratory awning to hear the dedication of the chapel to the late Revd. Bhaskar Onawale. Rain soon drove the party inside, where Revd. Onawale’s elder brother and several friends gave speeches describing his commitment to God, to service and to Deep Griha Society. After these speeches and several songs, the children of City of Child took the stage. Several solo and group dances, as well as lovely Marathi songs, showed the time and effort the children had put into rehearsing, and their delight in performing. Staff and volunteers then headed back to Pune after another productive and fulfilling day.
