City of Child hosts visit by postgraduate student doctors

Deep Griha Society’s City of Child (CoC) recently hosted postgraduate students from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) while they conducted a two-week rural community outreach programme.

The postgraduate students are currently studying Social and Preventive Medicine at AFMC. During their two week stay – which formed part of their training – the students visited rural families to develop an understanding of their needs and to offer advice on public hygiene.

The visit was part of an ongoing presence by the Department of Community Medicine, AFMC in the Kasurdi area. Regular visits by specialists in fields such as Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Dermatology and Dentistry mean that villagers are able to access free consultations and medicines. They can also travel to Command Hospital in Pune for surgery, including cataract operations.

City of Child team leader Rajesh Nimbalkar said: “The visit was a great success and enabled hundreds of people in the area to access education on hygiene and other areas of health.

“AFMC’s ongoing presence in the Kasurdi area is of great benefit to the inhabitants. Free specialist clinics take place throughout the year at the Kasurdi out patients’ clinic and from April an AFMC General Practitioner will live on a full time basis at CoC to offer support to people in the area.”

The rural community Outreach took place from 9-22 January and the villages visited included Kasurdi, Bhartgaon, Yavat, Boriendi, Varwand and Patas.

CeremonyOn the last day of the visit a ceremony was held in the presence of Air Marshal GS Joneja, VM, Director and Commandant of the AFMC. The postgraduate students demonstrated the results of their work to officials from AFMC. Local politician Mr Ramesh Thorat MLA and a number of local villagers also attended the ceremony and everyone present enjoyed a shared lunch. DGS was represented by Dr Neela Onawale and Dr Prakash Onawale.
