Annual International AIDS Candlelight Vigil

Candlelight Vigil 2012 34
As a finale to Glodal Aids Action Week on Sunday 20th May, DISHA and Wake
Up Pune participated in the 29th Annual International AIDS Candlelight Vigil.
The  vigil is organized by the Global Network of People Living with HIV, it seeks
to raise awareness about the presence and realities of HIV/AIDS in our communities, and to promote positive social action. The theme for 2012 was “ Promoting Health and Dignity Together.” The goal of the event is to dramatically raise awareness about HIV in Pune, and to simultaneously combat the stigma that surrounds HIV and leads to discrimination against HIV positive people.

The Pune Vigil was a huge success! It began with a rally at Golibar Maidan Shankar Sheth Road, followed by an energetic march down MG road. Participants wore awareness raising signs and chanted slogans, which
attracted a lot of attention from traffic and people on the street. The march ended at a stage event at MG road, where almost 800 people watched the program! The stage event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, and included a great variety of dance performances by the DISHA & Ramtekdi kids as well as from the Trinity dance group and dancer Ajay Verma. Mixed in with the dance performances was a Samvaad helpline mock-up demonstration, a balloon release and special guest, renowned social worker Ali Asgar Dekhani, a prominent local figure in construction who has founded five non-governmental organizations. The event also included moving speeches from an HIV positive speaker, and concluded with an upbeat performance from musical group Alloy-the original fusion.

A big thanks to Red FM and Radio Mirchi for helping to promote the evening, and to our performers who generously donated their time and talents!
