Akash Ovhal, Aadhar Kendra Child Sponsorship Program
Akash Ovhal is 19 years old and he is studying for his Bachelor in Commerce at the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College in Pune.
Akash’s educational development has been enabled by the support he has received at DGS. Through the Aadhar Kendra Child Sponsorship Program Akash receives support from the First Community Church in Columbus, Ohio, USA, a program which he has been a part of since he was 5 years old. As a result he has had the books, notebooks, stationery and school uniforms he has needed to remain in education.
Akash lives with his mother and his two younger sisters (15 and 16). Akash’s mother works as a cook at the DGS Family Center, and has done so for the past 10 years. She and her children are strong supporters of DGS because of the hope it provides for poor children to obtain an education and improve their employment prospects. They believe that children in the slums need not be trapped in the cycle of poverty.
Akash wants to become a businessman when he completes his education. He already works part time as a promoter at a mobile telephone store, getting some real-life business experience under his belt. He has many friends from school and in his home neighborhood. In his spare time, he likes to play cricket and football.
Akash is very candid in sharing a life-changing event: “When I was in the 10th Standard I saw a play entitled, “I Can Do It”. It had a positive message and was so inspiring and encouraging for me. I began to view my life’s dreams as possible. It was truly a turning point in my life.”
Besides education, Aadhar Kendra Child Sponsorship Program has provided Akash with nutrition and medical care while he was growing up. But equally or more important has been the emotional support he has received through his sponsorship. This has helped nurture his self confidence and he describes the DGS staff as ‘awesome’. He is eternally grateful to his sponsors and would like to meet them in the future.
“Now that I am on my way in life I feel that the financial help I have been receiving from DGS can be given to others who need the help to get them started.”
