DISHA Exhibition 17th Sep

DISHA held yet another exhibition on HIV/AIDS awareness on the 17th of September 2005. It began with a prayer and then the proceeding on to Suman's house at Sariputta Buddha Vihar. The site for the exhibition was a very small room where not all posters could be put up. Hence, it was decided that some posters also be put on the outside of the walls and some inside- where the film was being shown. The response however was very little. Girls and women were lesser than expected. Nevertheless, the youngsters were very keen and active.

During the course of the exhibition, an appeal was made to report to DISHA any aids cases, if known of, to those present. Of course, such information would be kept confidential. One such case was promptly reported by a young man who pointed out the house of the victim to the Deep Griha volunteers. Immediately, Suman and Rani went over to meet with the lady who was hiv positive. On speaking to her, they realised that the woman was in a pretty bad condition and needed immediate aid. So, they called for Avinash, who works with DISHA. Soon, he was at her place telling her about DISHA and the help that she would receive. They got her registered with DISHA and then got her admitted in a hospital as she had a severe case of loose motions.

However, due to power failure, the film could not be shown. The film show was postponed to a later date.

Deep Griha Society is a major partner in the Wake Up Pune campaign, which brings together a coalition of NGOs and civil society groups to run city-wide HIV awareness programmes.

The campaign has received significant international coverage and has reflected very positively on Deep Griha Society. DISHA has organised or contributed to many events under the Wake Up Pune banner this year - please visit www.wakeuppune.org for full details about the campaign.

In January 2008, Wake Up Pune was given an award by UNAIDS as recognition for the events organised on World AIDS Day 2007 (1 December). Subsequently, Wake Up Pune was chosen by the World AIDS Campaign to be the key implmenting partner for World AIDS Day India 2008.

In March 2008, the campaign was selected as a finalist for the World Bank-sponsored South Asia Regional Development Marketplace, held at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai. Grants of $40,000 were on offer for winning projects. Although Wake Up Pune was unsuccessful on this occasion, getting shortlisted was a significant achievement in itself. The event was also a great opportunity to network with other organisations and leading individuals working in the field of HIV & AIDS.
