DIYA Youth Resource & Activity Centre

In July 2008, Deep Griha opened its new centre, DIYA for young people aged 14-25 in Ramtekdi.

DIYA stands for Deep Griha's Integrated Youth Resource and Activity Centre, and also means 'light' in Marathi. DIYA aims to empower young people by providing access to a wide range of opportunities.

By providing a safe and supportive environment, the centre offers an alternative to criminal behaviour and substance abuse. DIYA provides:

  • Recreation facilities (including dance, theatre and fine arts workshops, board games and other indoor games)
  • Skills development (including English classes, computer courses, Spoken English classes, General knowledge classes, tailoring courses, henna classes, beautician courses, classes for making bags out of recycled paperjewellery making courses, and some crash courses on soft toy making)
  • Awareness sessions (on topics such as sex and sexuality, drug addiction and abuse, adolescent girl’s health, domestic violence, and personality development sessions for girls)
  • Counselling facilities
  • Career guidance ( help in finding new job opportunities)

On an average, DIYA has 35-40 beneficiaries every month. We have reached 750 beneficiaries approximately till date. Our DIYA children may not be very privileged by birth but they still try their best to help the society. Our DIYA girls helped students from Poona blind school with some project writing work and also in writing their exams along with many other things they did for some other specially abled students.

One of our primary aims is to ensure sustainability for the centre, partially through the extensive involvement of youth in the administration and execution of the centre's programmes. This capacity building is a key step to empowering beneficiaries to assume ownership and responsibility for the project.
