Child Development

The main focus of Deep Griha's child development programme is education. Children are given space to learn and develop, and are enabled to fulfil their potential, creating brighter futures.

Children over 5 years old receive education at local state-run schools. Generally, the standard of eductation in these schools is very poor. Deep Griha provides additional support to children from the slums. Many homes are cramped and there is little or no space for children to study. Many parents have little education themselves and may not be in a position to help their children with their studies.

Some of the classes focus on children who are struggling in their studies. Special attention is given to the basics - literacy and numeracy - to enable the children to make speedy progress and catch up with other students in their class.

Coaching Classes
Extra tuition is given to school children from deprived families, studying in the 1st to 7th standard.
Deep Griha's goal is for all children to sit the Secondary School Certificate examination, greatly improving their future prospects. Classes are also provided for children with special educational needs.

Juvenile Guidance Centre (School Dropout Programme)schooldropout-small
In this programme, informal education takes precedence. The beneficiaries are children who, for reasons beyond their control, have either dropped out or have never been to school. These children often live the life of an adult, with similar responsibilities. The centre allows these children to be children, at least for a few hours each day. Counselling is available for all children.

Formal Literacy and Post-literacy Classes are also available, covering classes from 4th - 7th standard. We also try to arrange entertainment and day trips, such as picnics and educational tours. Additionally, all children on the programme receive education materials, medical care and nutrition (one basic meal per day).

Hobby Classes / Summer School
Run by staff, volunteers and visitors, the summer school runs for two weeks every year and provides a safe environment for children to relax after their summer exams. The summer school is organised for approximately 120 children aged 6-14 years and provides them with opportunities to participate in games, songs, crafts and performances, and to see movie screenings.
