Youth Empowerment
Deep Griha's Youth Empowerment project provides opportunities for young people. The objective is to challenge feelings of helplessness and frustration that can lead to negative behavioural patterns such as gang culture, drug and alcohol abuse, and violence.
The Yuva Sphurti Kendra IT School and Youth Resource and Activity Centre are two key elements of the project. Deep Griha also runs additional programmes:
Youth Development Programmes
Targeting youths aged 12 to 18, these programmes increase self-confidence and future prospects through short seminars and courses. Special attention is given to girls who otherwise might receive no education at all. Seminars cover a range of relevant topics including:
- Sex education
- HIV & AIDS
- Health and hygiene
- Women's status and rights
- Skills training
The Girl Child Programme gives special attention to girls. Although it is illegal for girls under 18 to be married, the practice of child marriages continues. We strongly disagree with this practice, and work with our target communities to change perceptions about the role of young girls. Progress is being made, but it is slow; child marriage is still a major issue. We provide girl children with as much information as possible to prepare them, holding 2-3 day seminars four times a year, covering topics such as sex education (incorporating family planning), health and hygiene, family relationships and the role of the mother-in-law.
Additional Services
We also offer services to older students who have discontinued school past the 7th standard. The objective is to help them gain practical training, enabling them to find employment and earn a regular income. Services include:
- Referrals to Technical Training Institutes
- Assistance in obtaining a driving licence
- Vocational training classes held at the Family Welfare Centre
